And I think it has a lot to do with the themes she brings to her writing. While she's often writing about romance, love, and friendship, there is one theme that keeps coming up whenever I read her writing in any form.

And, to me, that is the sense of belonging her characters keep looking for. In the stories I've read by her, there is a consistant need to belong that her characters show.

They want to belong to one person, a group of friends, but most importantly, to themselves. Mistress Fortune, the manga and its protagonist, are no different.

Kisaki, after all, doesn't want to just belong to her crush and have him accept her love or be a part of the psychi organization she works for, but also wants to be a strong person for herself and her own powers.

She wants the love from both those places, but strives to better, instead of allowing them to love her as she is, lesser powers and all.

In many ways, her desire to be loved by her crush is also indicative of her dual personality, Kisaki and Mistress Fortune.

She wants Giniro to love her as a partner in both senses, and in both places; hence her continual efforts to bring him into her world and thus fully exist in it.

Loving Giniro is kind of a metaphor, in my mind, to loving herself. If he can accept her two sides, then she will have to too. Enough English major talk.

This is a great, one volume manga with two bonus commedy stories. This would make a nice OVA or movie and a series would be interedting however its more about plot and story.

The characters are interesting and complex though the author internationally only made a handful. Its ob Light, fluffy, humorous.

This is a hilarious quick read and it if wasn't for the dirty jokes I'd even say kids can read it. The dirty jokes are hilarious but Westerners avoid that in kids fiction.

Just a culture clash not a big deal. Even Naruto and Pokemon got away with dirty jokes. I'm interested in reading more about this author.

This is an atypical magic girl comedy as there is a boy as her partner and love interest. The plots are tied up neatly and the supernatural elements are original.

Everyone has the same power though which is a nice running gag, especially in the bonus story. Ebe-Ko working is the best side story.

The other side story is a bit LGBQ outting-ish but was still funny overall. I guess its a culture clash again or I'm just liberal.

It was based on an inside joke at the manga company involving if a character was male or female and it was pretty entertaining. I like that he defended himself about being girly lol.

It reminded me of the filler episode of Sailor Moon S where Minako and Usagi stalk Michiru and Haruka thinking Haruka is a cute boy but she is really an androgenous lesbian.

Where the book really does well is with the secondary characters. I couldn't help but wish that the book had focused on them more, especially the leader of the group Gunjo.

The chapter focusing on him at the end was in my opinion, the best part of the book. This might not be my favorite thing by Tanemura but it was still a lot of fun to read.

She works alongside Giniro, her partner-in-crime, for PSI, an organization that fights aliens, also known as Ebes, and together, they work to rid the world of the Ebes.

However, there's just one problem: Kisaki has feelings for Giniro, but isn't allowed to express them! Will she ever be able to let her know how she feels, or will other situations get in the way?

I really loved both Kisaki and Giniro and felt they were pretty well developed. Ebe-ko was a cute sidekick, but I feel like maybe she could have had a larger role.

Tanamura is one of two manga-ka's that I have collected all mangas for, the other being Matsuri Hino. I orgionaly read this between the ending of Genyleman's Alliance and Sakura Hime.

The art is beautiful and the story is light and sweet. I also wish this one had been a little longer, to allow for more development of the backstory, characters and relationships.

If you liked the 4. If you liked the art style, try one of her other works as well! Nice, quick read, lovely done as always by Arina Tanemura.

I almost forgot how incredibly detailed her work is. Even though it was a very short story only three chapters, with two bonus chapters included hardly focusing on our main characters , it felt pretty complete despite its rather open ending.

Yep, I really did enjoy this. Can I have an alien like Ibuko, by the way? Or whatever they translated her to in English.

She's in love with her partner Giniro, but PSI won't allow operatives to get involved. Just when Kisaki thinks she may be getting closer to Giniro, she finds out she's going to be transferred to California!

Its amazing. I would say its a very fun book! Jan 15, Starbubbles rated it it was ok Shelves: manga.

I think I have bad luck with first books of the year. This really wasn't good. At least the art was fine, but it still.

The story was meh, and at times a little difficult for me to follow. That didn't exactly make me feel all that great since it should have been a fairly straightforward story.

That floating rabbit was my favorite part in all of this. Yes, that sounds right. Anyway, the story was a solid "okay. Today was bunny laundry day at the laundry mat and i brought this manga with me to read.

I had picked this one up at Borders "Going out of Business" sale. My only complaint is that i wished it was a longer series. Arina did mention in the foot notes though that she may make a sequel.

I didn't realize until I got home that I'd already was quiet familiar with the mangaka's work. It's an adorable middle school romance and only one book.

It's all very predictable so definitely in the brain candy category. The artwork is lovely though.

This book was the best by far of all of Arina Tanemura's books. But Sakura Hime Kaden is better still. Tachikawa Kisaki is a year-old girl who's a drop-out ESPer.

The story also feels very rushed, even for a one shot. ION had a couple more chapters and overall more development and even the shorts in her collection Squib Feeling Blue felt more well-rounded.

Maybe if this had two chapters more instead of bonus stories or would have gotten the Time Stranger Kyoko treatment it could have worked a little bit better.

Kisaki is a very naive young girl, which is probably age appropriate, but she is also not written as the sharpest tool comparing how she once accidentally blew up a rice steamer to Giniro accidentally blowing up his house , killing two family members goes too far and there is not much going for her apart from her massive crush on her partner.

Everything she does is motivated by Giniro. Her desire to control her powers better only comes from her wish to impress him and her briefly leaving the team because she is told it could help someone close to him, but there is little Kisaki in there.

I have no idea who she is as a person. There is also a lot of fat-shaming going on for some reason. Not that Giniro is doing much better as a character, but compared to Kisaki he at least gets some backstory and personal motivation.

The one strange, to call it that, characteristic here is that Arina tries to write him as the "lovely perv" type. And for some reason Arina thought trying that with a boob obsessed 14 year old.

Okay, whatever. Mistress Fortune might be the Manga by her that really made me realize that I have grown out of her kind of storytelling.

Originally posted here at Anime Radius. I've always been a moderate fan of Arina Tanemura's works - Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne was a pleasant romp while Full Moon o Sagoshite had me in tears with every volume.

However, I approached the glossily covered Mistress Fortune with no small amount of trepidation; I've never known shoujo manga-ka like Tanemura to do well in the arena of one-shot manga.

They either end up too short or without any focus and become a big mess by volume's end. Luckily, this parti Originally posted here at Anime Radius.

Luckily, this particular manga does not fall into that trap. Which is not to say that Mistress Fortune has single-handedly overturned the genre of magical girls with superpowers in any big way, but it does make a lot of tired tropes enjoyable to read, which is a feat in itself in an era of Nanoha and Card Captor Sakura clones.

Amid Tanemura's typically gorgeous art, all decked out in shoujoesque tones and gradients without becoming overbearing, is a love story. A love story, of course, that happens to involve teenage psychics protecting the world from aliens who actually seem pretty cute for the most part.

Kisaki is a spirited enough protagonist, one who works hard and cares deeply about her partner while juggling her work and her school and her personal life.

She also makes Mistress Fortune a blast to read; any other protagonist, anyone less cheerful and genki, would have absolutely killed the mood of the story.

It also helps that the story itself has a lot of fun elements, like the odd little aliens and the inner workings of PSI, not to mention the entire California subplot which involves - well, I won't spoil you, but if you know who the editor of this particular manga is, you'll be doing a double take after the American PSI member is introduced.

Go, Tanemura, go! In general, Mistress Fortune is a lighthearted fun single volume of mahou shoujo manga; absolutely no risk in picking this one up.

There's tons of romance and action and humor and magic between the covers; no reader will go disappointed.

It's typical Tanemura - and that's no insult. Aug 01, Luke Reynolds rated it really liked it Shelves: magical , manga , fantasy , lol , romance , heartwarming , books-i-own , cute , mylikes.

There's also some good background art and the whole thing was just so cutely drawn. Here are some examples: Forgive me for posting so many pictures, but I can't resist.

Well, even if Giniro is a little bit of a perv :P. The supernatural elements with Giniro and Kisaki being part of an agency to protect the world from aliens was also interesting, even if most of the development was solely focused on the characters.
